Electrolysis

For permanently removing unwanted hair growth, electrolysis is currently the only treatment available to do so.

What’s good about electrolysis is that all skin types can be catered for by altering the method used as there are different methods available.

All hair types can also be treated; including coarse or fine hair so you can rest assured that there will be successful results no matter your hair and skin type.

If you want to know the differences, feel free to ask your beautician during your consultation!

Pre-Treatment

Preparation

It is important that when you come to your appointment, you have clean skin with minimal added product. It is important that the skin area is intact and healthy before your session takes place. We highly recommend NOT to eat spicy foods and caffeine during the week leading up to your appointment. These will increase skin sensitivity and can cause flare ups for any existing skin conditions. It is important to hydrate. Drinking plenty of water helps unwanted hair slide out more easily. It is important to gently exfoliate your skin before your treatment as this opens up the follicles and lets the unwanted hair slide out more easily. You are allowed to ONLY shave between treatments but never any other hair removal techniques. It is important to avoid plucking, waxing, threading, or tweezing before your hair removal appointment as this reduces the number of hairs your electrologist can remove. The hair grows in cycles so you may need more treatments but your electrologist will go through this with you.

Post-treatment

Aftercare

It is important that you keep the area clean and dry for the first 48 hours post treatment. AloeVera gel should be applied liberally using clean, damp cotton wool immediately after electrolysis to soothe, calm redness and prevent infection. We recommend continuing to apply Aloe Vera gel for the next 21 days. Do not pick spots or small blood scabs which may appear a couple of days after treatment and depending on the skin, may take between 7–21 days to heal. These are normal after your electrolysis treatment and are part of the healing process. For clients who have long hair, to reduce the risk of infected follicles, keep hair tied back off the face. When washing or cleansing use gentle unperfumed cream cleanser or facial wash, we recommend not using soap on the treated area as this will further dry the skin. Do not pluck, tweeze, thread or remove hair with wax or depilatory cream remover between electrolysis treatments, as this will interrupt the hair growth cycle. It is safer to simply trim any noticeable unwanted hair with scissors. Avoid any perfumes, fake tan or other harsh chemicals for 72 hours after treatment. Try to avoid any makeup for 48 hours after treatment as this can increase the risk of infection. Avoid any skin exfoliation for 72 hours following treatment. Avoid any products that contain alpha hydroxy acids, retinol, and glycolic acid for at least 7 days after treatment. Avoid extreme exercise, saunas, sunbeds and exposure to heat for 72 hours after treatment. These can cause sweating which can irritate the delicate skin and slow down your ability to heal quickly. Avoid swimming for 72 hours after treatment. We highly recommend avoiding any excess alcohol or caffeine and spicy foods for 48 hours after treatment. Wear SPF 30 or greater sunscreen for at least 2 weeks following treatment as your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight afterwards. Avoid any further cosmetic treatments e.g. Botox or dermal filler for 2 weeks following treatment, or ask your practitioner for advice. Avoid any heated treatments for 72 hours(very hot showers, saunas, heated swimming pools, jacuzzis, heated steam facial, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the only method approved by the FDA for permanent removal of unwanted hair. Regardless of the cause – hereditary, metabolic, or hormonal conditions – electrolysis will permanently remove unwanted hair. A small electric current is transmitted by a fine, sterile probe (or needle) directly into the natural opening of the hair follicle, destroying the dermal papilla, the matrix, and an area called “the bulge”, all of which cause hair to grow and regenerate. Medical electrolysis devices can destroy the hair growth cells with chemical energy, heat energy, or both. There are different methods available. All are effective.

Does electrolysis hurt?
Electrolysis doesn't typically cause too much discomfort. You may feel a slight tingling and slight stinging sensation. Talk to your electrologist about any worries you may have.

How many treatments will I need?
There is no definitive answer for this. Depending on the area you want cleared, it could be a few minutes for a followup appointment to an hour for a larger area. Factors such as hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods, heredity, hormone function, certain medications and stress influence the treatment program for each individual.

Why should I choose electrolysis over other hair removal methods?
Electrolysis is the only method approved by the FDA for permanent removal of unwanted hair. As the hair is treated, regrowth is slowed and eventually prevented rather than just removed temporarily. Only electrolysis provides both hair removal and hair elimination. Also, Electrolysis is effective for all skin types, hair types, skin colours, hair colours, and areas of the body.

What do I need to know before electrolysis?
For a more comfortable treatment, avoid caffeine for a few hours before your appointment. Gently exfoliating your skin before your treatment opens up the follicles and lets the unwanted hair slide out more easily.
If your electrologist can’t see the hairs, they can’t zap the hairs. Plucking, waxing, threading, or tweezing before your hair removal appointment reduces the number of hairs your electrologist can remove.
Rest assured that electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognised as permanent by the FDA.
Ask your electrologist for aftercare advice. We can recommend the product that is right for your skin and treatment program.
Talk to your electrologist about any questions or concerns. We want your experience to be as comfortable and effective as possible.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water helps unwanted hair slide out more easily.
Clean skin releases unwanted hair more easily. Remove your makeup before your appointment, so the hair follicles are clean and accessible.
It’s okay to shave between treatments, but never, ever tweeze!
The hair you see is not all the hair you have. Hair grows in cycles. That’s why it takes more than one appointment to permanently clear an area.

How long before you see a difference with electrolysis?
Electrolysis takes some patience but it's absolutely worth the wait as the effects are truly permanent. Most patients start to have noticeable results after several treatments, however, it can take on average 8-18 months for full results.

Why do people get electrolysis hair removal?
Different people have different reasons. Constant maintenance and a lengthy routine that takes a lot of time, unwanted hair creating self-consciousness serious enough to impair relationships with other people, general feeling of cleanliness, preference, etc. are all reasons why. If unwanted hair gets in the way of your confidence, social life, work, sports, schedules, or even self-expression, this is your opportunity to act.
