Hair Restauration

Restore, regrow, and maintain your hair

Hair loss and hair thinning are an unavoidable reality for most at some point in their lives. An estimated 8 million women in the UK suffer from alopecia and two-thirds of all men are eventually affected by male pattern baldness, meaning hair loss is common. A lot of those affected can feel insecure about their hair, with many looking for alternatives to combat hair loss (including treatments that have negative side effects and do more damage than good!) A treatment that not many are familiar with is PRP and i-PRF. This revolutionary procedure uses the body’s own resources meaning no added chemicals, biological agents and transformative results!

HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN AND MEN

While most people associate hair loss as an ageing process in men, this is not the case. Recent NHS research has found that an estimated 6.5 million men in the UK will deal with significant hair loss. By the age of 50, 85% of men will have significantly thinner hair. However, according to the NHS, an estimated 8 million women will struggle with significant hair loss by the age of 50 and more than 60% of all women in the UK will experience hair loss at some point in their lives starting as early as the teenage years. Despite this newfound research, the preventative hair loss industry primarily focuses on men.

Unfortunately, there is a social stigma for women when it comes to hair thinning and loss which means women tend to keep quiet about it. There are many factors for hair loss in general but there are a lot more for women in particular.

Factors like stress, physical trauma, hereditary, diet and lifestyle, vitamin deficiencies, illnesses, and ageing are reasoning for hair loss in everyone however, hormonal imbalances, postpartum stress, dieting and eating disorders, medications, thyroid abnormalities, menopause, forms of contraception, harsh hairstyles affect women. Although there isn’t much research on the link between preservatives and hair loss (especially for women), it is suggested that some preservatives in food and daily products can actually cause hair loss. In an issue that can feel so isolating, it is important that we come together to break the stigma that hair loss is not a women’s issue and tackle hair loss in everyone, regardless of gender.

When it comes to the tubes that are used for PRP/i-PRF treatments, some blood collection and blood test tubes are used but this is not ideal for a treatment like PRP/iPRF. Blood collection is one of the first steps in a PRP/iPRF treatment which is why some practitioners use phlebotomy tubes (it is the same step as a blood test, which is what those phlebotomy tubes are made for). Your aesthetician should always have your best interest at heart, therefore, it is much more effective and safer to use an extra sterilised and properly packaged device specified for PRP/i-PRF treatments.

Because the blood that is extracted from your body is being put back in as platelet-rich plasma, the apparatus that is used should be specialised and sterilised. That is why we use Universal PRP/i-PRF tubes which have a triple sterilised process and double packaging to ensure the cleanliness and success of your treatment is at the highest possible standard. They are also pyrogen-free meaning there are no bad microorganisms nor any illness and fevercausing substances that have come into contact before being used in your session.

Before and After

Contraindication

Risk factor

You should not have PRP treatment done if you have any of the following conditions: • An impaired immune system due to immunosuppressive diseases, HIV, HTV, or immunosuppressive medications • Skin conditions and diseases including: Facial cancer, existing or uncured. This includes SCC, BCC and melanoma, systemic cancer, and chemotherapy. • Steroid therapy, dermatological diseases affecting the face (i.e. Porphyria), communicable diseases, blood disorders and platelet abnormalities, anticoagulation therapy (i.e. Warfarin) • Do not have PRP treatment if you are pregnant.

Pre-Treatment

Preparation

7 days before treatment: • Discontinue blood thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, and Essential Fatty Acids, and multivitamins, a minimum of 7 days (preferably 14 days) prior to treatment. It is fine to continue iron and vitamin D. • If you are taking any blood thinners, please let your provider know immediately, as they may represent a contraindication to this treatment. These medications include Plavix, Coumadin and Heparin. • Avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Iburprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications. We want inflammation to occur – as this is one mechanism by which PRP works. • You may use Tylenol (acetaminophen) as needed prior to the treatment. • Prescription medications (including heart and blood pressure medication) should be taken as prescribed right up to, and including, the day of and the day after your treatments. • If you are taking broad beta-blockers such as Inderal (Propranolol), please inform your provider as this medication may need to be changed to a select beta-blocker in advance of the treatment. • Avoid excessive sun or heat exposure. 3 days before treatment: • Minimize or avoid alcohol consumption. • If possible, refrain from or minimize smoking prior to your procedure as it impacts the healing process. • You may continue other hair loss treatments such as laser treatment, minoxidil, or hormone blocking tablets before your procedure. If you are not sure if you should be stopping a medication, please ask. • It is ok to color your hair up to 7 days before the procedure. Please see reverse side of page Diet and Fluid Intake: • Increase your intake of fluid the day before your procedure by simply drinking 2 glasses of water in the morning, 2 glasses at lunch, and 2 glasses at dinner, in addition to your normal intake of water. Day of Procedure: • Shower the morning of your treatment and wash your hair very thoroughly using your regular shampoo. • Do not apply sprays, gels, or any other styling products to your hair. • If you wear a hair system, please remove it prior to shampooing and do not wear it before your PRP treatments. • Please eat a normal breakfast or lunch the day of your PRP session. • Drink a bottle of water (500 mL) at least 2 hours before your session. • It is strongly recommended to take a hot shower to wash your hair that evening, after the treatment, to promote the effects of PRP.

Post-treatment

Aftercare

It is normal to experience bruising, redness, itching, swelling and/or soreness that may last from 2-5 days following your treatment. If you experience any pain or discomfort you may take Tylenol or other Acetaminophen-containing products as directed. You may have a bruise at the blood draw site. You may notice a tingling sensation while the cells are being activated. In rare cases, skin infection or reaction may occur, which is easily treated with an antibiotic or inflammatory. Please contact our office immediately if you notice unusual discomfort. Try to refrain from applying ice to the injected area as ice acts as an anti-inflammatory. Ice or cold compresses can be applied to reduce swelling if required. Continue to avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Iburprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications for 3 days after your procedure (if possible try for 7 days). Avoid vigorous exercise, sun and heat exposure for at least 2 days after your treatment. Do not wet your hair for at least 3 hours after your treatment. For the first 3 days, use shampoo that is pH balanced. Do not use any hair products for at least 6 hours after your treatment. Be sure to take a hot shower and wash your hair that evening, after the treatment, to promote the effects of PRP. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming for 2 days after your treatment. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking for 3 days after treatment. Smokers do not heal well and problems recur earlier and results may take longer. Avoid resuming Minoxidil (Formula 82M, Rogaine®), hair coloring, and straightening for 3 days. Continue increased water intake the first week after your treatment. Do not use blood thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, Essential Fatty Acids and least one week after your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How is PRP / i-PRF used for hair restoration?
PRP injections can be effective in treating male/female pattern baldness and alopecia, both in preventing hair loss and promoting new hair growth. Hair loss is generally caused by a lack of cell renewal in the scalp – which makes PRP the perfect treatment as it stimulates the production of new healthy cells. It’s thought that PRP contains proteins that serve several main functions that are thought to help hair regrow; helping your blood to clot, and encouraging cell growth.

What happens during the PRP/i-PRF hair restoration procedure?
PRP is prepared from an extract of your own blood and is a short procedure, commonly lasting between around 60 minutes. At first, 30 – 60 ml of blood is drawn from your arm The blood is then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins and separates the platelets from the rest of the blood components 3 – 6 ml of platelet-rich plasma will then be extracted The concentrated and growth factor-concentrated platelets are injected into the scalp via micro injections.

When will I start seeing results?
The results of PRP/i-PRF can usually be seen between two to three months post treatment. Depending on your type of hair loss, and the extent of the loss, PRP for hair restoration is usually recommended as a course of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Then depending on your individual needs, a maintenance session once a year is usual and highly recommended.

Who is eligible for PRP/i-PRF hair restoration treatments?
Your practitioner will have a consultation with you to successfully determine whether you are eligible and what your desired outcomes from the session are. Those who are struggling with male and female patterned baldness, stress related hair loss, alopecia or other forms of hair loss and thinning are almost always eligible. PRP/i-PRF treatments work to preserve your hair and regrow dormant hair follicles.
