Skin Lesion Removal

Get your self-esteem and comfort back

Although most skin lesions are harmless, people still decide to get them removed for varying reasons, whether that be cosmetic or for comfort.

Some people find that skin lesions impact their confidence and removing them increases their self esteem, others find their skin lesions to be uncomfortable and can be felt in clothing.

Whatever your reason is, we can help you. Your aesthetician will assess you during your consultation and decide what is the best approach for you. Once this is done, your treatment will begin and your confidence will come back!

There are different ways to remove skin lesions but we use a shortwave diathermy treatment as we believe it gives the best results and is a simple procedure. It is the most common way of treating skin blemishes and lesions as it is very efficient.

We use the UK’s leading diathermy equipment by Sterex so you can feel confident that your procedure will be high quality and your results great!

What is shortwave diathermy? The shortwave diathermy machine and treatment uses heat as a basis, heating and coagulating the tissue and blood, leading to minimal to no bleeding. This is because the machine uses a fine, hair-like needle to heat up the blood in the targeted lesions and veins, which seals them shut and causes the vein to break down. The machine closes the wound which reduces the chance of excess bleeding as well as limiting any scarring.

Some of ours treatments

SKIN TAGS They are very common and most frequently found on the neck and face. They often appear with a neck, similar to a mushroom and vary in size - ranging from a tiny speck to the size of a pea, some can be bigger. They are mostly found in areas of frictions where the skin folds such as the armpit, under the breasts and around the neck (where jewellery may be worn).

THREAD VEINS They are not broken capillaries but are permanently dilated. Because of their very thin walls, they lose elasticity over time due to onstantly dilating and constricting, eventually ending up permanently dilated. This is due to numerous causes including smoking, sun damage, ageing, alcohol, genetics, sports, extreme weather exposure, hormones and skin fragility.

BLOOD SPOTS They are bright red, vascular blemishes which lie under the surface of the skin. They often become dome shaped, raised and are most common on the torso. They are most prevalent in people over the age of 30 and occur more frequently in males than females.

SPIDER NAEVUS It is a collection of small, dilated blood vessels clustered very close to the surface of the skin. It includes smaller capillaries radiating from it. The cluster of vessels is web-like, with a central spot. They can be found in isolation or gathered together in areas such as the face.

MILIA These are tiny white hard lumps containing keratin which lie superficially under the surface of the skin and can easily be treated with electrolysis. The exact cause is unknown but they are often linked to dry and dehydrated skin. Milia usually appear around the eyes, nose and cheeks and are not generally itchy or painful but can cause discomfort.

DERMATOSIS PAPULOSA NIGRA It is the presence of multiple harmless, small, 1–5 mm diameter, smooth, firm, black or dark brown papules on the face and neck. It is common in people of colour; often with the Fitzpatrick skin phototype 4, 5 or 6

WARTS They are small, rough lumps that often develop on the skin of the hands and feet. Warts vary in appearance and may develop singly or in clusters. Some are more likely to affect particular areas of the body

VERRUCA Depending on the subtype of verruca, they can present differently in appearance. Most of the time, if they are on the bottom of your foot such as the heel or the ball they will develop hard skin over the top and there may be some mild discomfort when walking.

MOLES They often appear as small, dark brown spots and are caused by clusters of pigment-forming cells (melanocytes). They appear as small, dark marks, or sometimes flesh-coloured small bumps, on your skin. Moles can appear in a range of different colours, shapes and sizes.

SEBORRHEIC KERATOSIS A seborrheic keratosis is a common non cancerous (benign) skin growth. They are frequent in people as they get older. Seborrheic keratoses are usually brown, black or light tan. The lesions look waxy or scaly and slightly raised.

Before and After

A FREE consultation and patch test will be required 48hrs prior to your first appointment.

Pre-Treatment

Preparation

It is important that when you come to your appointment, you have clean skin with minimal added product. It is important that the skin area is intact and healthy before your session takes place. We highly recommend NOT to eat spicy foods and caffeine during the week leading up to your appointment. These will increase skin sensitivity and can cause flare ups for any existing skin conditions. It is important to hydrate. Drinking plenty of water helps unwanted hair slide out more easily. It is important to gently exfoliate your skin before your treatment as this opens up the follicles and lets the unwanted hair slide out more easily. You are allowed to ONLY shave between treatments but never any other hair removal techniques. It is important to avoid plucking, waxing, threading, or tweezing before your hair removal appointment as this reduces the number of hairs your electrologist can remove. The hair grows in cycles so you may need more treatments but your electrologist will go through this with you.

Post-treatment

Aftercare

It is important that you keep the area clean and dry for the first 48 hours post treatment. AloeVera gel should be applied liberally using clean, damp cotton wool immediately after electrolysis to soothe, calm redness and prevent infection. We recommend continuing to apply Aloe Vera gel for the next 21 days. Do not pick spots or small blood scabs which may appear a couple of days after treatment and depending on the skin, may take between 7–21 days to heal. These are normal after your electrolysis treatment and are part of the healing process. For clients who have long hair, to reduce the risk of infected follicles, keep hair tied back off the face. When washing or cleansing use gentle unperfumed cream cleanser or facial wash, we recommend not using soap on the treated area as this will further dry the skin. Do not pluck, tweeze, thread or remove hair with wax or depilatory cream remover between electrolysis treatments, as this will interrupt the hair growth cycle. It is safer to simply trim any noticeable unwanted hair with scissors. Avoid any perfumes, fake tan or other harsh chemicals for 72 hours after treatment. Try to avoid any makeup for 48 hours after treatment as this can increase the risk of infection. Avoid any skin exfoliation for 72 hours following treatment. Avoid any products that contain alpha hydroxy acids, retinol, and glycolic acid for at least 7 days after treatment. Avoid extreme exercise, saunas, sunbeds and exposure to heat for 72 hours after treatment. These can cause sweating which can irritate the delicate skin and slow down your ability to heal quickly. Avoid swimming for 72 hours after treatment. We highly recommend avoiding any excess alcohol or caffeine and spicy foods for 48 hours after treatment. Wear SPF 30 or greater sunscreen for at least 2 weeks following treatment as your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight afterwards. Avoid any further cosmetic treatments e.g. Botox or dermal filler for 2 weeks following treatment, or ask your practitioner for advice. Avoid any heated treatments for 72 hours(very hot showers, saunas, heated swimming pools, jacuzzis, heated steam facial, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can skin lesions be removed?
Yes, people can have skin lesions removed for health and cosmetic reasons. Talk to your aesthetician about your concerns and what you want out of your session to get the best results.

What can I get removed?
We currently offer removal of thread veins (dilated capillaries), blood spots (bright red vascular blemish underneath the surface of the skin), spider naevus (central dilated blood vessels with smaller capillaries radiating from it), skin tags (very common and often found of the neck and face and folds of the skin, vary from a raised speck to the size of a pea or larger), milia (tiny white hard lumps containing keratin underneath the surface of the skin), dermatosis papulosa nigra (smooth, dome shaped, brown or black papules mostly seen on cheeks, neck and upper chest), warts, verrucas (small lump on the soles of your feet), seborrheic keratosis (benign skin lesions as a result of UV damage and ageing), and moles (hairs in moles can be removed and colour of moles can be reduced).

Does removing lesions hurt?
After your procedure, there should be very minimal pain. There may be some slight soreness, swelling, or bruising. Your aesthetician may recommend over-the-counter medicines or ways to help with any discomfort, should you feel any. Most people can return to their normal routine the same day of their procedure.

How does the treatment work?
The skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution.
A fresh, sterile needle is inserted along the line of the blemish/lesion.
A heat sensation will be felt, similar to a pin prick.
This will cause gradual reduction in the appearance of the lesions (e.g. capillaries) or complete removal of the skin tags. In most cases, the treatment will be done in one session however on very rare occasions, you may need 2 sessions.
